Automobiles have designed air intakes to allow for ventilation, air flow and climate control. These designed air intakes are located at the lower windshield area, inside the cowl plenum chamber. These air intakes are located specifically to access relatively clean air for usage inside the passenger compartment. Most of today’s vehicles have cabin air filters typically located behind the glove compartment or under the hood or dashboard. Its job is to filter all of the air that comes through the car’s HVAC system to prevent pollutants, such as dust, pollen, smog and mold spores from entering the passenger compartment. There also can be undesigned air intakes (body-faults). These undesigned air intakes, if located in an area of negative pressure on the vehicle’s perimeter can cause significant dust intake. Most dust leaks occur at lower and rearward vehicle locations. Dust leaks are common in rear wheel housings and the lower door sill areas. In these wheel housings exists an area of high pressure resulting from the forward motion of the vehicle causing a vacuum action inside the vehicle that pulls air and dust into the vehicle. The air that is pulled into the vehicle typically leaks out of the vehicle up high and the resulting dust settles low. This is due to the pressure differences created above and below the vehicle while it is in motion. The road dust that is lifted by the negative air pressure under the vehicle enters the rearward wheel housings and is simply pushed into the vehicle. Almost all dust leaks occur at lower and rearward locations. Dust leaks leave a trail at the entry point that is either cone shaped or slit shaped. These trails can help locate the source of the dust leak.
