You just washed your new car or you came out of the house first thing in the morning only to see your headlights are full of water or heavy condensation. Don’t be afraid moisture doesn’t mean your headlights are defective or broken.
Condensation happens when the outside of the lens is cooler than the inside. When your lights are on for a few hours, the bulbs warm the air inside the headlight lens. When you park your car in the shade or for the night, the temperature drops and the cooler air wants inside. The cooler air sneaks into any crack in the seal of the composite headlight or through defective or worn bulb gasket or through the tiny vents that are found in all headlights. These vents allow excess amounts of heat to exhaust. If you turn the lights on or park your vehicle in direct sun, the moisture will eventually evaporate through the vents. When that cool air meets with the warm, condensation forms. This happens on the warm side of the lens; a little layer of moisture forms on the inside of the headlight lens.
High Intensity bulbs operate at very high temperatures and cause the headlight components to actually heat up and expand. During rain, cooler temperatures, snowy days or going through car washes, condensation can occur. Parking the car in the direct sun or running the vehicle with the headlights on will help “burn off” the condensation. Vehicles equipped with LED headlights operate at a much lower temperature so it takes longer for the condensation to “burn off”.
Another reason for headlights to fill with condensation is the bulb socket gaskets may not be sealed properly. When the headlights are on and hot, the heat will pull moisture in through tiny spaces where the gasket is not sealed correctly. To fix this problem, just remove the bulb and the seat, then install it correctly. If the gaskets are damaged or worn out, they’ll need to be replaced.
If you see a lot of water inside your headlights or the condensation doesn’t “burn off” it means the seal around the composite headlight is not sealing properly – rain water could seep into your headlights or window taking your vehicle through the car wash can cause water to enter into the headlights.
